Have you ever thought about how impermanent life really is?
Every situation, circumstance and condition changes in an instant, yet we tend to fret in the moment that it occurs and get ourselves all twisted up about what’s really happening now.
In 1987, Cosmo (played by Vincent Gardenia) in the popular movie, Moonstruck, doubts the validity of his daughter’s engagement and asks to see her ring. When she shows him a mere pinkie ring her fiancé has given her instead of a proper engagement ring, he questions this arrangement even more. Loretta Castorini (Cher) said it best when she turned to her father to respond and shouted, “Everything is temporary!”
Isn’t this what we forget to tell ourselves during those situations that frustrate, disappoint and confuse us? Or when we find ourselves in different circumstances than the outcomes we expected?
We as human beings tend to lose ourselves emotionally in moments when what we thought was going to happen turns out not to be the end result. We dwell on what has occurred. We turn it over and over in our minds. We think and rethink it until we succeed in exhausting ourselves. And then, in many cases, we start reprimanding ourselves for somehow causing the experience.
Keep in mind: What you think about you bring about.
Focus your thoughts on what you want instead of what has transpired. After all, whatever is done is done. It’s over. You can’t change it. You can’t start over before it happened.
What you can do is simply break the spell of reliving what you have experienced over and over again by reminding yourself that everything IS temporary.
The moment you focus your thoughts on what you desire and put your energy and actions into making that happen, you’ll find that your situation will change – and change quickly.
Our lives are impermanent from the moment we take our first breath to the day we take our last. To get caught up in a single situation is pointless. We are here for such a short period of time.
By understanding that everything is temporary, you release the ruts you may find yourself in during moments of your life and run in the direction of your dreams more readily.
When you recognize that you truly live a life filled with change and transition, just as we all do, you may suddenly find comfort in knowing that whatever you are experiencing right now is going to change. It’s your destiny.
So whatever it is that you are experiencing right now, hold on because it’s liable to change at any moment. Good, bad, exciting, disappointing, thrilling, frightening or frustrating, I promise you – and I am happy for you – that any second now, it’s going to be different.
When you can live your life with the understanding that it is impermanent, you’ll learn from the good times and those not so pleasant. You’ll make different choices about who you spend your time with and what you do. Most of all, you’ll allow yourself the freedom to go from moment to moment without hesitation, delay and distress.
The transitions you make will be smoother because you’ll be more apt to follow the flow of what you want to experience instead of getting mired in and making unpleasant situations and circumstances last longer than they have to.
Release yourself and remember: Everything is TEMPORARY!
You can do it!
Tell me about a situation where it changed so quickly because you didn’t think that much about it. I’d love hear how you have found that everything really is temporary in your own life.
